Description

View of sailors preparing to hoist sails on a dhow (sailboat) in the Persian Gulf near Dubai. Two sailors stand in the foreground, one facing forward and one facing backward. Behind them a group of sailors mill about beneath the dhow's main yard in front of the cockpit and the main mast. Above them another sailor stands on the main yard, in front of a large sail which is beginning to fill with wind. This image was taken during Wilfred Thesiger's May 18-28, 1948 journey by dhow from Dubai to Bahrain Island.

Due to the nature of these images, prints will reproduce any signs of age, wear or damage that occurred before they were archived by the Pitt Rivers Museum.
