Full length seated portrait of Ahmed, Captain Haji Mansur's mate, on a dhow (sailboat) in the Persian Gulf near Bahrain. Ahmed sits in the sun on a wooden yard that has been lashed to the bow of the dhow. He wears a T-shirt and wraparound skirt, and has a ghutra (headscarf) tied around his head. A length of chain crosses the platform in front of him. In the far distance land is visible along the horizon, beyond the an expanse of water gently rippled by the wind. This image was taken during Wilfred Thesiger's May 18-28, 1948 journey by dhow from Dubai to Bahrain Island.
Due to the nature of these images, prints will reproduce any signs of age, wear or damage that occurred before they were archived by the Pitt Rivers Museum.
