Description

Portrait of two Arab sailors changing the sails on a dhow (sailboat) travelling through the Persian Gulf from Dubai to Bahrain Island. Two men perch on a sail yard, below which a sail hangs. On the left one man in a thobe (long shirt) and cap crouches on a wooden yard. On the right another man, wearing a ragged ghutra (headscarf) and thobe (long shirt), is is tying a rope. Behind them the sky is clear and empty of clouds. This image was taken during Wilfred Thesiger's May 18-28, 1948 journey by dhow from Dubai to Bahrain Island.

Due to the nature of these images, prints will reproduce any signs of age, wear or damage that occurred before they were archived by the Pitt Rivers Museum.
