View of Muhammad's encampment in the Ramlat ar Rabbad sands near Bir al Tawil. Three people stand beside a small striped goat-hair tent which has been pitched amongst sand dunes next to a few dry bushes. In the sand around the tent lay a number of items of clothing and equipment. Dunes surround the tent in all directions, and in the far distance a lone figure walks down a sloping dune toward the tent. Wilfred Thesiger and his men stayed with Muhammad, a sheikh of the Rashid Bedouin, and his family for a few days during their first crossing of the Empty Quarter (Rub' al Khali) in December 1946.
