View of sand dunes and a Bani Yas settlement in Liwa oasis. Tufts of grass or qassis (sedge) grow in a depression between sand dunes in the central foreground. In the distance beyond groves of date palms grow in depressions between the dunes and across a far sand flat. High above the groves a number of 'arish huts occupied by Bani Yas villagers sit on steep-sided dunes in the central distance. In the far right distance sand dunes rise along the horizon below a cloudless sky. This image was taken during Wilfred Thesiger's journey from Al Ain to Liwa oasis, Al Dhafra and Baynunah sands in November and December 1948.
