Three-quarter length portrait of Muhammad, a sheikh of the Rashid Bedouin, in his encampment in the Ramlat ar Rabbad sands near Bir al Tawil. Muhammad, an elderly man with a long white beard, reclines in the sand, propped up on his right elbow. In the background a number of men sit in a semicircle. Wilfred Thesiger and his Bedouin companions stayed with Muhammad and his sons during Wilfred Thesiger's first crossing of the Empty Quarter (Rub' al Khali) in December 1946.
