Description
Portrait of sailors rowing a dhow on which Wilfred Thesiger sailed with Sheikh Hazaa bin Sultan Al Nahyan and his retainers. A number of men sit on the gunwale of a sailboat, holding oars. On the far right two sailors pull on a large wooden oar. Beside them a drum barrel rests against the side of the boat. Further along the gunwale, another pair of sailors pull on a second oar. At the far left a man sits on a drum barrel alongside a hanging knot of sail rigging. This image was taken during Wilfred Thesiger's week and a half long sailing trip around the Abu Dhabi Islands with Sheikh Hazaa bin Sultan Al Nahyan, Sheikh Khalid bin Sultan Al Nahyan and their retainers in March 1948.

Due to the nature of these images, prints will reproduce any signs of age, wear or damage that occurred before they were archived by the Pitt Rivers Museum.
