View of a Bani Yas settlement in Liwa oasis. A clump of qassis (sedge) grows on a sand ridge in the central foreground, beyond which low rolling sand dunes stretch out towards a far sand flat. Groves of date palms grow in the depressions between the dunes and across the sand flat. Above the flat a number of 'arish huts occupied by Bani Yas villagers sit high up a steep-sided sand dune in the central distance. In the far distance sand dunes rise high up across the horizon below a cloudless sky. This image was taken during Wilfred Thesiger's journey from Al Ain to Liwa oasis, Al Dhafra and Baynunah sands in November and December 1948.
