Description

Seated profile portrait of an elderly tribesman of the Manasir Bedouin at a Manasir encampment in the Baynunah sands. An elderly man with a thick beard sits in the sand, facing towards the right, with a camel stick resting against his leg between his knees. He wears a ghutra (headscarf) tied closely around his head and a light coloured thobe (long shirt). In the background thick clumps of vegetation grow across a vast sand flat behind him. This image was taken during Wilfred Thesiger's journey from Al Ain to Liwa oasis, Al Dhafra and Baynunah sands in November and December 1948.

Due to the nature of these images, prints will reproduce any signs of age, wear or damage that occurred before they were archived by the Pitt Rivers Museum.
