Description
Seated portrait of a man in the Al Ain region. The man kneels on the ground beside a geometrically patterned carpet, holding a rifle in his hands. He wears a thobe (long shirt), a headscarf (ghutra) topped with agal (head ropes), and has a khanjar (dagger) tucked into his cartridge belt. On the far left, behind the man, is a couched camel. In the background a flat plain of rocky sand, almost entirely bare of vegetation, spreads out into the distance. This image was taken during April 6-30, 1948, when Wilfred Thesiger stayed at Al Muwaiji fort in Al Ain as a guest of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan.

Due to the nature of these images, prints will reproduce any signs of age, wear or damage that occurred before they were archived by the Pitt Rivers Museum.
