View of a salt plain in the Empty Quarter (Rub' al Khali) in Al Batin sands region. A ridge of bare dunes in foreground overlooks a vast salt flat (sabkha) dotted with vegetation. More shrubs and bushes grow on the near side of the flat than at the far side, which is bordered by a high ridge of wind-rippled dunes known as dune massifs.
