Description

Portrait of three of Wilfred Thesiger's sailing companions on the deck of a sailboat (dhow) in the Abu Dhabi islands. Two men sit at the stern of a sailboat. The man on the right holds a young boy in his lap. The man at the left kneels beside the boat rail on a woven mat. Behind the men a lantern hangs from the cloth-covered frame of the boat's awning. In the background a rowboat bobs behind the boat in a calm, flat sea. This image was taken during Wilfred Thesiger's week and a half long sailing trip around the Abu Dhabi Islands with Sheikh Hazaa bin Sultan Al Nahyan, Sheikh Khalid bin Sultan Al Nahyan and their retainers in March 1948.

Due to the nature of these images, prints will reproduce any signs of age, wear or damage that occurred before they were archived by the Pitt Rivers Museum.
