Description
Full length sanding portrait of an Arab man with a donkey in the Al Ain / Buraimi oasis. An Arab man stands facing forward in front of a small loaded donkey. In his hands he holds the head rope for the donkey and a riding stick. The man wears a khanjar (dagger) on a belt and a waistcoat over his coloured thobe (long shirt). He also wears a patterned ghutra (headscarf) hanging loosely around his head and shoulders, which is topped with an 'agal (head rope). In the background a few trees grow in the sand. This image was taken between December 20, 1948, and January 27, 1949, during which time Wilfred Thesiger stayed with Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan in Al Ain and joined him on a number of hunting excursions.

Due to the nature of these images, prints will reproduce any signs of age, wear or damage that occurred before they were archived by the Pitt Rivers Museum.
