Half length portrait of a Bedouin tribesman in the Al Khatam sands in the Al Ain / Buraimi oasis. A smiling older Bedouin man with a thick beard sits in the sand. He is wearing a large, light coloured ghutra (headscarf) loosely wrapped around his head, shoulders and chest, which is secured with a braided 'agal (head rope). In the background trees grow in the sand alongside a few 'arish huts made from palm fronds. This image was taken between December 20, 1948, and January 27, 1949, during which time Wilfred Thesiger stayed with Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan in Al Ain and joined him on a number of hunting excursions.
Due to the nature of these images, prints will reproduce any signs of age, wear or damage that occurred before they were archived by the Pitt Rivers Museum.
