Description

Three-quarter length portrait of Ali, a young Iranian sailor, on a dhow (sailboat) in the Persian Gulf between Dubai Emirate and Bahrain Island. A twelve-year-old sailor leans against the poop rail of a dhow, next to a wooden trunk and a knot of rope. He wears a wraparound skirt, a waistcoat over his T-shirt, and has a ghutra (headscarf) tied around his head.
Behind him the sea is a vast expanse of gentle waves. This image was taken during Wilfred Thesiger's May 18-28, 1948 journey by dhow from Dubai to Bahrain Island.

Due to the nature of these images, prints will reproduce any signs of age, wear or damage that occurred before they were archived by the Pitt Rivers Museum.
