View of Wilfred Thesiger's travelling party heading towards palm groves in Liwa oasis. Salim bin Ghabiasha, a tribesman of the Bayt Imani lineage of Rashid Bedouin, stands in the right foreground on the slope of a large sand dune. He is holding a rifle and a small stick. At the bottom of the slope five of Wilfred Thesiger's Rashid Bedouin companions lead their camels in a line towards one of four date palm groves in the far distance. The groves sit in circular depressions between the high dunes, and are cultivated by Bani Yas villagers. In the far distance sand dunes stretch out across the horizon below a hazy sky. This image was taken during Wilfred Thesiger's journey from Al Ain to Liwa oasis, Al Dhafra and Baynunah sands in November and December 1948.
