Description

View of a member of Wilfred Thesiger's travelling party standing beside a camel at a palm grove in Liwa oasis. In the foreground one of Wilfred's Rashid Bedouin companions stands between two couched camels in an expanse of soft sand. The man has his back turned to the camera and is looking towards a palm grove, likely cultivated by Bani Yas villagers, in the far distance. The man wears a cartridge belt over his light coloured thobe (long shirt) and a dark ghutra (headscarf). Blankets and supplies sit in the sand on either side of the camels. In the distance a second grove of date palms rises above a further dune. This image was taken during Wilfred Thesiger's journey from Al Ain to Liwa oasis, Al Dhafra and Baynunah sands in November and December 1948.

Due to the nature of these images, prints will reproduce any signs of age, wear or damage that occurred before they were archived by the Pitt Rivers Museum.
