Description

Seated portrait of three of Wilfred Thesiger's sailing companions in camp on one of the Abu Dhabi islands. Three men kneel in the sand in a line beside a rolled sleeping mattress. All three men wear ghutra (headscarves) and thobe (ankle-length shirts). In the bushes behind them cooking pots and plates dry in the sun. This image was taken during Wilfred Thesiger's week and a half long sailing trip around the Abu Dhabi Islands with Sheikh Hazaa bin Sultan Al Nahyan, Sheikh Khalid bin Sultan Al Nahyan and their retainers in March 1948.

Due to the nature of these images, prints will reproduce any signs of age, wear or damage that occurred before they were archived by the Pitt Rivers Museum.
