Description

Full length portrait of Ali, a young Iranian sailor, on a dhow (sailboat) in the Persian Gulf near Bahrain. A twelve-year-old sailor sits in the sun on a wooden yard that has been lashed to the bow of the dhow. He is smiling, and wears a wraparound skirt, a waistcoat over his T-shirt, and has a taqiyah cap on his head. Above him a worn sail catches the wind, while behind him the sea is a flat expanse of gentle waves. This image was taken during Wilfred Thesiger's May 18-28, 1948 journey by dhow from Dubai to Bahrain Island.

Due to the nature of these images, prints will reproduce any signs of age, wear or damage that occurred before they were archived by the Pitt Rivers Museum.
