Description

Portrait of one of Wilfred Thesiger's sailing companions on the deck of a dhow (sailboat) in the Abu Dhabi islands. A sailor kneels on a rolled woven mat at the stern of the boat, which he steers with the tiller in his left hand. He is wearing a light western waistcoat over his long thobe (shirt), and a headscarf. A blanket and cartridge belt lie against the hull of the boat on his left, and in the background a crumpled sail is tied to the frame of the boat. This image was taken during Wilfred Thesiger's week and a half long sailing trip around the Abu Dhabi Islands with Sheikh Hazaa bin Sultan Al Nahyan, Sheikh Khalid bin Sultan Al Nahyan and their retainers in March 1948.

Due to the nature of these images, prints will reproduce any signs of age, wear or damage that occurred before they were archived by the Pitt Rivers Museum.
