Portrait of a thirty-four-year-old Japanese man named Saitō Jirōtarō, a samurai and officer (performing the function of censor) on the 1864 Ikeda mission to France. He is pictured wearing traditional dress of kimono with mon (family emblem) and is carrying a katana (long sword).
