Description
Portrait of a thirty-two-year-old Japanese man named Tanabe Taichi, a samurai and officer (performing the function of first secretary) on the 1864 Ikeda mission to France. He is pictured wearing traditional dress of kimono and is carrying a daishō, or pair of swords (katana and wakizashi).
