Description

Full length sanding portrait of an Arab falconer, a member of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan's hunting party, in the Al Ain / Buraimi oasis. The falconer stands in front of a low [ghaf?] tree, holding a peregrine falcon on a mangalah (cuff) on his arm. The falcon perches on the mangalah facing forward, with its head looking back over its shoulder. The falconer has a short dark beard and wears a khanjar (dagger) on a belt over his light coloured thobe (long shirt). He also wears a ghutra (headscarf) tied closely around his head. This image was taken between December 20, 1948, and January 27, 1949, during which time Wilfred Thesiger stayed with Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan in Al Ain and joined him on a number of hunting excursions.

Due to the nature of these images, prints will reproduce any signs of age, wear or damage that occurred before they were archived by the Pitt Rivers Museum.
